Keeping Your Little Village Smiling...

How to Prepare for My Baby's First Dental Exam

As parents, our lives are filled with our children’s firsts – first steps, first words, first birthday, first tooth… but do you know the recommended age for your child’s first dental appointment? It might be earlier than you think.

First Appointment

The American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommends that every child see a dentist after their first tooth comes on or before their first birthday. That may sound really young, but there are many benefits to these early appointments. The most important benefit is that we can begin to understand your child’s oral development and possibly prevent any potential problems that might occur in the future. Early visits also help kiddos get used to dental exams and learn not to be afraid of the dentist.

Committed to Comfort

It is our mission to provide a fun and comforting environment for all of our patients – especially the youngest ones. We know that visiting the dentist can be stressful for kids and for their parents. We do all we can to make kiddos feel safe and their parents feel comfortable.

What to Expect

For the littlest patients, we will complete an oral exam and cleaning in the knee-to-knee position. The parents or guardian will sit with knee-to-knee with one of our team members. The child will sit on their caregiver’s lap facing them, and lie with their head in the dental provider’s lap. We will do a brief oral exam that won’t take long and won’t hurt. We’ll take a quick peek into your child’s mouth and you’ll be right there the whole time to comfort them.

How to Prepare Your Child

Hopefully, you’ve already been cleaning your child’s gums. If not, today is a great day to start! Simply use a clean, wet washcloth and gently wipe your baby’s gums every day. This will not only help keep his or her mouth free of bacteria, but it will help them get used to having someone touch their mouth.

Before your appointment, tell your child that you will be going to a dentist who will be looking in their mouth. We find it best not to tell your child that “nothing will hurt,” because they might not have considered that possibility and it could make them worry more. Remember that you will be holding them the whole time, so if they need reassurance in the moment, you’ll be right there.
