Keeping Your Little Village Smiling...

Infant Care

Our team at Village Pediatric Dentistry, along with the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend a baby's first dental visit as soon as their first tooth erupts, which is normally around 6 months old. If they don’t have any teeth by the time they turn 1, you should still bring them in anyway.

During this visit, we’ll introduce your child to everyone in the office so they can get used to their new surroundings. Our staff will then gently clean their mouth and gums and give them a short oral exam while they lay down in your lap. After that, they’ll discuss how you can take care of your child’s teeth as well as what developmental milestones you should look for.

Why Is Dentistry Important for Infants?

Because dental cavities can occur in even the smallest of teeth! The earlier your baby visits us, the more likely they are to avoid dental issues.

How to help prepare your infant prepare for their first visit:

We will complete your child's oral examination and dental cleaning in the knee-to-knee position.  You will sit knee-to-knee with one of our dental hygienists and your child will sit on your lap facing you, with one leg on either side of your waist.  You will lay your child back across a cushion in your laps.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Practice this position at home
  • Introduce an electric toothbrush early, the vibration mimics our dental toothbrush
  • Small dental mirrors are sold on Amazon or in the dental section at the pharmacy, purchase one and practice  playing dentist at home!
  • Stranger danger in infancy is completely normal.  Your child is in a new environment surrounded by strangers.  It is not uncommon for this initial visit to trigger many tears!
  • Positive reinforcement and praise go a long way
  • Sing a song during the cleaning that might help soothe or comfort your little one
