Keeping Your Little Village Smiling...

Why Baby Teeth Are Important

Oral Hygiene Recommendations

All parents know that there are lots of things to keep track of when it comes to caring for your kids. From guiding their growth to scheduling appointments, there are many decisions to make. Dr. Laura wants you to know she’s proud to be part of the team that helps care for your child’s teeth. Keep reading to learn more about her recommendations for your child’s optimum oral health!

Early Dental Care

Before the first baby teeth make an appearance, cleaning your baby’s gums with a damp washcloth during bath time is an easy and comforting way to introduce them to the sensation or oral care. When the first baby teeth appear, a soft bristle finger brush is a gentle way to help your baby get accustomed to the feeling of having their teeth brushed.

Establishing Routines

As your child grows and more teeth appear, establishing a brushing routine of two minutes twice each day will help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Parental supervision is recommended, dependent on when your child demonstrates responsibility and an ability to get around every tooth!

Toothbrush

Selecting the proper toothbrush can help your child get a healthier smile with ease and comfort. Be sure that your child can comfortably grip the handle and that the head of the brush fits into your child’s mouth. Once your child is 3 years old, Dr. Laura recommends switching to an electric toothbrush from a trusted brand like Oral B or Philips Sonicare.

Dental Floss

Did you know that brushing only reaches about 60% of the total surface area of your teeth? Once your child’s teeth start touching, add flossing to your dental routine, and clean between every space in their teeth. Whether you choose dental tape, floss threaders, or floss picks, flossing daily is an essential habit!

Toothpaste: Hydroxyapatite vs. Fluoride

Both fluoride and hydroxyapatite toothpastes aim to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. While both can be beneficial for teeth, select one that works best for your family. If you would like more information about this topic, just ask Dr. Laura! No matter what kind of toothpaste you choose, make sure to look for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) seal of approval on the packaging to ensure that you’re getting the best toothpaste possible.
