Keeping Your Little Village Smiling...

Tips and Tricks on How to Break the Habit

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for babies and young children. It's a common way for them to self-soothe, helping them feel secure and fall asleep. However, this small habit can have a big impact on dental development and speech if allowed to continue after permanent teeth begin to come in. At Village Pediatric Dentistry, we’re here to help families understand how to stop thumb sucking in a gentle, stress-free way.

Why Thumb Sucking Becomes a Problem

Thumb sucking is perfectly normal through infancy and the toddler years. In fact, it is estimated that 73% of children 2 – 5 years of age use non-nutritive sucking habits to help soothe. But if the habit continues past age 4–5, when children start getting their permanent teeth, it can lead to:

  • Misalignment of teeth
  • Narrowing or constriction of the roof of the mouth
  • Speech issues, specifically related to clarity
  • Increased risk of illness

Our team is passionate about helping your child build and maintain healthy oral habits from the very start. So, while we understand that this habit is incredibly common in infants, we’re here to guide and support parents in learning how to stop thumb sucking as children grow older.

Tips on How to Stop Thumb Sucking

Here are a few tried-and-true tips from Dr. Laura:

1. Positive Reinforcement Works Wonders

Reward your child with praise, stickers, or a special activity when they avoid thumb sucking—especially during times they normally would, like while watching TV or falling asleep.

2. Identify Triggers

Some children suck their thumbs when they’re anxious, tired, or bored. Gently help your child recognize these triggers and offer alternatives like a stuffed animal or a fidget toy.

3. Make It A Team Effort

Include your child in the process. Create a fun chart to track their progress and talk openly about why stopping thumb sucking is important for their smile.

4. Offer Gentle Reminders

Avoid scolding or punishment, which can make the behavior worse. Instead, use a soft reminder like a sticker or a signal word to help them break the habit.

5. Try Thumb Guards or Bandages

Sometimes a physical reminder helps. Non-toxic thumb guards or simply placing a bandage on the thumb at bedtime can discourage thumb sucking.

6. Use of a Bitter Polish

For older kids really struggling to stop sucking, it might be time to try using a stronger reminder. Remember to continue to keep this a positive experience. A non-toxic bitter polish (such as Ella and Mila - No More Biting) can be another helpful tool to discourage thumb sucking.
