Keeping Your Little Village Smiling...

When Should My Child Start Seeing A Dentist?

Many parents wonder when their babies should see a dentist for the first time. After all, they do not even have many teeth that first year. But the age that your child should see a pediatric dentist is probably earlier than you think.

Let the Firsts Be Your Guide

The American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommend a child see a pediatric dentist by the time their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday – whichever happens first. That may seem early, but there are a lot of benefits from these early appointments. Dr. Laura can get a good idea of your child’s mouth that can predict any potential future issues. This helps with preventative treatment as your child grows. Early appointments also get your baby accustomed to visiting the dental office. Helping your child feel comfortable early on at the dentist can make appointments less scary in the future.

Habits to Start Early

Many parents wonder if baby teeth even matter since they will eventually fall out. The answer is a big YES! Baby teeth help children eat and speak, and act as placeholders for their permanent teeth. You should start getting your child (and yourself) into the daily habit of cleaning their teeth and gums from a young age. Gently brush your child’s teeth with an age-appropriate toothbrush twice a day. If your child does not yet have teeth, gently cleanse their gums with a clean, wet washcloth.

What to Expect at the First Appointment

Your child’s first appointment will be quick and easy! You will first meet the dental hygienist who will complete an exam and determine if your little would benefit from a dental cleaning with our special toothbrush.  Then, Dr. Laura will look in your baby’s mouth to conduct a simple oral exam. She will discuss any causes for concerns and answer any questions that you may have. You will be with your child the entire time and will be able to hold them during the exam. We will do everything possible to make your child (and you) feel as comfortable as possible.

How to Prepare for Your First Appointment

Be sure to talk to your child about going to visit the dentist before their appointment. Even if they are not able to understand yet, it will help you be less anxious about the idea. You can also practice asking your child to open their mouth so that you can look inside. Gathering all of your insurance information so that it is easy to access at the appointment is also important.
