When Will My Child's Teeth Come In?

When Will My Child’s Teeth Come In?

What an exciting time! Your precious baby is growing and changing every day, and marking the milestones is one of the best parts of the journey! Helping your baby grow and learn is a rewarding challenge, but there are challenges along the way that are hard for parents and for babies, and teething is one of them. The good news is that teething doesn’t last forever! Keep reading for Dr. Laura’s tips about saying hello to baby teeth, and later, saying goodbye as adult teeth begin to appear!

Hello Baby Teeth

  • Massage the Gums: Gently rub your infant’s tender gums with a clean finger or a soft cloth. This can help reduce some of the pain related to teething.
  • Teething Rings: Find a teething ring your baby likes. Solid rubber teething rings are preferred as a liquid teething ring can sometimes break. Keep it cold, not frozen!
  • Cold Foods: Once your baby is eating solids, offer cold foods. Mesh feeders are a great option to put frozen fruits in. This helps alleviate the pain related to teething. Dr. Laura’s favorite options are below and can also be found on her Favorite Products page!
  • Avoid Teething Gels: Avoid the use of topical medications or ointments in the mouth. Although they are available for purchase, the FDA warns against using these products.
  • Pain Medicine: Infant acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used for severe discomfort, but only under a doctor’s guidance.

Goodbye Baby Teeth

  • Offer Reassurance: Losing a baby tooth is a new experience that can feel scary to your child. Offer hugs and reassurance that all feelings are okay and that you’re excited that a new adult tooth will be arriving soon!
  • Encourage Wiggling: Once a baby tooth is very wiggly, Dr. Laura encourages kids to use their tongue or bite hard foods to encourage the tooth to come out. Sometimes, the supporting gum tissue gets sore around a very wiggly baby tooth – this is expected! – so the sooner they get it out, the better they will feel.
  • Pain Medicine: OTC acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used for severe discomfort, but only under a doctor’s guidance.
  • Celebrate the milestone!

Make an Appointment

Once your baby’s first tooth arrives, it’s time to make a dentist appointment! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommend that a child sees a pediatric dentist by the time their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday, whichever happens first. That may seem early, but there are a lot of benefits from these early appointments. When Dr. Laura examines your child’s mouth, she and her team can help predict any potential future issues and offer preventative treatment as your child grows. Your child’s first appointment will be quick and easy!

Call our office today if you have any questions and to schedule your appointment! We look forward to seeing you! Welcome to our Village!
